About Roopami

I didn’t start Roopami because I had a business plan. I started it because I kept noticing the same thing everywhere I went — a phrase my grandmother used that made no sense in English, an art form on a wall that most of us walk past without a second look, a WhatsApp forward that made an entire family group chat laugh at the exact same joke. Little pieces of being Indian that we live with every day, but rarely see reflected in what we actually wear.

Most clothing brands either go all-in on “traditional” — heavy, festival-only, something you’d wear once a year — or they skip India entirely and just import whatever’s trending somewhere else. I wanted something in between. Something you’d genuinely reach for on a Tuesday. A hoodie that carries a 700-year-old art form from a village wall. A tee that says the one phrase that instantly tells someone which city raised you. A design that makes your engineering-grad friend send it to the entire college group chat because it’s just too accurate.

That’s really what Roopami is trying to be — modern India, made wearable. Not a costume, not a caricature. Just the actual, everyday texture of what it feels like to be from here — the languages, the art, the humor, the nostalgia — designed the way we’d actually want to wear it.

Every piece is designed and printed right here in India, made to order rather than mass-produced and warehoused, which means less waste and a little more care in every single piece that goes out. We’re still early, still growing, still figuring a lot of this out — but every design that makes it onto the site is one I genuinely wanted to exist before Roopami made it real.

If something here makes you smile, or reminds you of home, or makes you tag a friend saying “this is so you” — that’s the whole point. Thank you so much for being a part of it.
